COMPARATIVE IMPACT ANALYSIS OF DROUGHT IN MARATHWADA REGION, INDIA

Sagar Khetwani and Ram Babu Singh

Abstract

Drought in the 21st century is a very complex phenomenon, directly or indirectly impacting the lives of billions of people. The semi-arid Marathwada region of Maharashtra state in India became the global center of attraction due to the tragic drought of 2015. This study aims to make a comparative analysis of the drought events of varying intensity in the Marathwada region. The rainfall anomaly index has been used to quantify the events of meteorological drought. The results obtained after the analysis revealed that events of exceptional deficiency of rainfall or even continuous drought events are also not new for this region. The deficiency of rainfall during the 1971-72 drought was much greater than the 2014-15 drought. The field survey was undertaken for assessing the people’s perceptions about the drought impact intensity. At last, it provides suggestions to the various stakeholders of the society for drought risk reduction.
