Abstract

Exposure to radiation is considered as a major source of health concern, especially in a high background radiation environment. Ionising radiation dose to human beings has its major sources from the natural environment itself. Primordial radionuclides in soil constitutes the major part of the terrestrial component of natural radioactivity. There are quite a few identified monazite sand bearing placer deposits causing environmental high background radiation along its long coastline of Kerala and Tamil Nadu in India. The magnitude and extend of the natural radioactivity in such regions are well known. Even though other regions are believed to have normal environmental radiation levels, radioactive pockets resulting from the monazite patches seen sporadically. We have identified certain regions along the littoral regions of the south west coast of Kerala with higher levels of natural radioactivity through gamma dose survey meters. We made a detailed investigations of the area in terms of primordial radionuclide contents in the surface soil, ambient gamma activity and radon exhalation measurements in the locations namely Varkala and Poovar. The results indicate that the soil samples having higher specific activity of 226 Rabears a line arrelation to 222Rn exhalation rate. Radon emanation factor, external gamma dose and risk factor from the exposure were also determined.
