A CASE STUDY ON SPATIAL VARIATION OF SURFACE WATER QUALITY BY WQI METHODAYISHA SIDIQUA M., KARPAGAM V., K. JAGADEESH AND Y. IBRAHIMAbstract The current status of Water Quality Index (WQI) in and around Chennai was brought into limelight in this study. The purpose of this study is to know about the geographical variation of surface water quality in urbanized areas. This contemporary study shows that the surface water is potable. But simultaneously the surface area of the water body and its quality is going on depleting (reducing). The reasons for it may be (1) due to the effect of urbanization and (2) climate change. But as a result during the time of monsoon it doesn't serve its purpose as serving a sink.About seven parameters like pH, electrical conductivity, total hardness, chlorides, total dissolved solids, alkalinity and dissolved oxygen were used for Water Quality Index (WQI) analysis. It helps to give the quantified solution based on quality parameters of water. From this study it was revealed that surface water requires some pre-treatment to kill pathogens and to be safe.
