Abstract

To evaluate fluroquinolone resistance among Enterobacteriaceae from urinary isolates by disc diffusion and MIC methods. A prospective analytical study on all Enterobacteriaceae isolated from urine samples for a period of one year from August 2017 to July 2018 were selected. Further evaluation of fluroquinolone resistance among Enterobacteriaceae from urinary isolates was done by disc diffusion and E test as per CLSI guidelines. Analysis of 1000 urine samples from patients showed 26.3% were culture positive. Of 278 isolates, 78.4% were Enterobacteriaceae. Comparative evaluation of fluroquinolones sensitivity by E-test and Disc Diffusion methods for Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin, Levofloxacin and Ofloxacin were found to be statistically insignificant. Whereas study on antibiotic sensitivity pattern of fluroquinolones sensitive against fluroquinolones resistant uropathogenic enterobacteriaceae to Cotrimoxazole, Cefotaxime, Nitrofurantoin, Nalidixic acid, Amikacin, Gentamicin, Imipenem and Meropenem were statistically significant (p<0.005) except for Nitrofurantoin (p>0.005). To conclude, though E-test is more sensitive and specific in susceptibility testing, because of its cost and limited availability, disk diffusion can still be suggested as a primary screening tool for detection of antibiotic resistance before conduction of E-test.
