Abstract

The study was designed to evaluate protective effect of royal jelly on some testicular function after treating the adult male rats with chronic dose of one of the antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), Pregabalin (PGB) for 60 days. In the current study, the oral administration of royal jelly was evaluated for effects on the development of sexual organs and reproductive performance of pubescent male rats, total sperm count, spermatozoa abnormality, histopathology of testis and sexual hormoneswith the effects of PGB on male fertility by evaluating some andrological parameters. Results of the present study were shown sperm count in PG group decreased significantly in comparison with control and RJ groups (p<0.05), RJ co-administrated with PG announced partially improvement and enhancement in number of sperm, sperm viability and motility, furthermore the data showed that the percentage of the sperm abnormality in the RJ coadministrated with PG was decreased significantly (p<0.05), in comparison with control, also, in comparison to the control and royal jelly groups, were increased sperm cells with DNA damage in PG group. The rats were administrated RJ simultaneously PG demonstrated a decline in sperm DNA damage. FSH, LH level no significant differences appeared between the control and RJ group while there was a significant increase in the testosterone concentration in the RJ group compared with control group. FSH, LH and testosterone in PG group were significantly (p<0.05) reduction compared with control and RJ groups. In RJ+PG group revealed remarkable increased (p<0.05) in the three hormones level in blood circulation in comparison to other groups. while histological examinations of the testicular tissue revealed that the PG and RJ+PG group sections of testis and epididymis were normal and showed no pathological changes like in the control group, while in the RJ group the sections of testis showed generalized edema, there were inter tubular amyloid deposition with vascular congestion. The epididymis tubular showed sever edema, associated with muocoid degeneration of epithelial cells and necrosis of tubular.
