Geeta Mehta, Sahil Jaggi, Akshat Mahajan and Anshul Garg

Abstract

This paper is proposed to introduce waste hair and coconut fibre as efficient and economical natural fibre inimproving the mechanical properties of concrete and controlling micro cracks. Compression test, flexuraltest, split tensile test and slump test were used to determine the effect of these fibres on mechanical propertiesof concrete. Split tensile test was key parameter to understand the effect of these fibres on crack propagation. It was found that Compressive, Tensile and flexural strength is maximum at replacement of 1.5% hair fibreand 2% of coconut fibre with the cement and reduction in micro cracks is also recorded. The observedincrease of 7.5% in compressive strength, 24.5% in tensile strength and 13.8% in flexural strength of concreteis obtained with 2% replacement of coconut fibre and 1.5% of hair fibres keeping aspect ratio of 125 . It isconcluded that with utilization of coconut and hair fibres stronger and cheaper concrete can be obtained.
