THE EFFECT OF OKRA (ABELMOSCHUS ESCULENTUS MOENCH) PODS EXTRACT ON MALONDIALDEHYDE AND CHOLESTEROL LEVEL IN STZ-INDUCED DIABETIC MICE

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of various fractions of okra pods extract (VOPE) to the changes of the blood cholesterol and serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in STZ-induced diabetic mice. This study used 28 male Balb/c strain mice. The samples were divided into seven groups, they were KN (normal control), KD (diabetic control), KA (acarbose control), EK (crude extract), NP (non-polar), SP (semi-polar), and EP (polar). VOPE and acarbose suspension were administered orally for 14 days in STZ induced diabetic mice. The diabetes was induced by the intraperitoneal injection of multiple low-dose STZ (30 mg/kg body weight) daily for five consecutive days. On day 15, mice were sacrificed. Data on the blood cholesterol and MDA levels were analyzed. Interestingly, it showed that the administration of VOPE could reduce blood cholesterol and MDA levels in STZ-induced diabetic mice. In conclusion, VOPE is a promising antidiabetic agent due to its antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic properties.
