EFFECT OF ASPERGILLUS FLAVUS ON GLUTATHION- STRANSFERASE (GST) ACTIVITY OF SPODOPTERA LITURAMANDEEP KAUR, POOJA CHADHA, SANEHDEEP KAUR, AMARJEET KAUR AND PRINCE SHARMAAbstract Insects defense against different insecticides involve variety of biological processes. The living system creates potent detoxifying enzymes which detoxify various toxins. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is the one of the main enzyme which detoxifies number of xenobiotics and is responsible for insectâs resistance to pesticides. In the present study the effect of crude extract of Aspergillus flavus on the activity of GST enzyme in Spodoptera litura was studied and also the irreversibility of damage induced by fungal extract was investigated. The larvae were treated with fungal extract having concentration 1.4mg/mL. The effect of extract on GST activity was studied after 24, 48, 72 and 96hrs. The results showed a significant (pâ¤0.05) increase in enzyme activity as compared to control. On the other hand recovery of stress induced by fungus was studied after 1day and 2 days of feeding larvae to control diet after exposure to fungal extract at particular time duration. Overall non-significant (p>0.05) decrease in GST activity was found after feeding larvae to control diet which showed that A.flavus induced stress was not recovered in S.litura. Results indicated that fungal extract has propensity to cause toxicity in S.litura larvae which resulted in increased GST activity.
