Abstract

Sewage contains organic waste and excessive nutrients which adversely affect aquatic environment. Therefore, treatment of household sewage is necessary before its final disposal. Anaerobic hybrid reactor (AHR) technology can be used to treat sewage because it has dual advantages of high solid retention and treatment efficiency. Present study was conducted to design anaerobic hybrid reactor by using UASB and bio filter technologies. Anaerobic hybrid reactor R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 with different dimensions were constructed using glass to treat household sewage at feeding rate 2mL/min with the help of peristaltic pump. After treatment, the maximum COD removal of 88.5% was observed in AHR R3 having height 40 cm, diameter 9 cm, filter bed height 19 cm and working volume of 2 litres. Among AHRs, AHR R3 has highest removal of VFA, TDS, TSS and VSS. These results prove higher efficiency of AHR R3.
