INTER-AREA AND INTER-SPECIES COMPARISON OF CHROMIUM, NICKEL AND COBALT LEVELS IN MILK OF DAIRY ANIMALS FROM NORTH GUJARAT USING ICP-AESR. R. DESAI, H. B. PATEL, R. D. SINGH, V. N. SARVAIYA AND S. K. MODYAbstract In the present study, heavy metal concentrations of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) in 800 milk samples of cattle and buffalo collected from four different areas designated as industrial (Area 1) and non-industrial (Area 2) areas of Mehsana district, industrial (Area 3) area of Gandhinagar district and non-industrial (Area 4) area of Banaskantha district in North Gujarat region were determined and compared for inter-area and inter-species variations. The average values of Cr, Ni and Co in milk of cattle were 0.188 ± 0.014, 0.144 ± 0.011 and 0.133 ± 0.013 mg/L, respectively. Similar values for buffalo milk were 0.272 ± 0.029, 0.245 ± 0.015 and 0.214 ± 0.018 mg/L, respectively. The range of heavy metal residues (mg/L) in milk of cattle were observed as Cr (0.009 to 1.481), Ni (0.013 to 0.875) and Co (0.011 to 0.878). Corresponding values (mg/L) in buffalo milk were estimated as Cr (0.001 to 2.455), Ni (0.003 to 0.875) and Co (0.004 to 1.556). The comparison of inter area variation in the values of heavy metal in cattle and buffalo milk samples collected during entire year, witnessed the highest values of Cr and Ni in area 4 and Co in area 2.
