Abstract

Heavy metal pollution poses a major risk as it leads to toxicity affecting humans and animals, thus disrupting the ecological balance. Chromium falls under the category of toxic metals. The hexavalent chromium (Cr+6) is the highest oxidation state of chromium and exerts mutagenic and carcinogenic effects on different biological systems. The present study is aimed at bioremoval of Cr+6 through the utilization of living bacterial biomass. The contaminated soil of a tannery industry at Kanpur, India was utilized for isolating Cr+6 resistant bacterial isolates. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and maximum tolerable concentration (MTC) of all the bacterial isolates were determined to obtain the most potent bacterial isolate. Two bacterial isolates VITAB01 and VITAB02 were found to have minimum inhibitory concentration of 400 and 600 mg/L respectively. These isolates also tolerated Cr6+ at a maximum concentration of 4000 mg/L. Further, bioremoval assay was carried out and the isolate VITAB02 was able to remove 87.19% of Cr+6 at an initial concentration of 400 mg/L and pH 4. Finally, the potent isolate VITAB02 was characterized and identified as belonging to the genus of Bacillus sp. by conventional biochemical tests according to Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology.
