FORMULATION OF BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL ISOLATES FOR THE DEGRADATION OF SANITARY NAPKINS IN IN VITRO CONDITIONSGAYATHRI B. AND V. GAYATHRIAbstract The present study aimed to formulate a bacterial and fungal isolate for the degradation of sanitary napkin based on their enzymatic activity on sanitary napkin for active degradation. Bacterial isolates namely Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas sp and fungal isolates includes Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium notatum isolated from the dump yard soil. In vitro degradation under controlled condition and soil degradation under environmental condition was performed. In soil degradation three types of soil used Agricultural soil, garden soil, sewage sludge soil among those soil garden soil showed the high degradation rate. In vitro degradation, high degradation rate was found out in in vitro degradation method by Aspergillus niger among fungal isolate and Pseudomonas aeruginosa among bacterial isolate. Lyophilized bacterial and fungal isolates were prepared which can be made commercially for the degradation of sanitary napkins in order to prevent the formation of large dumpsite that leads to environmental pollution.
