Abstract

Diabetic foot infection is a known public health problem and infection with multi drug resistant organisms cause frequent and prolonged hospital admission with increase in the health care cost. Among non-diabetics, it is not well documented in terms of etiological agents and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. To generate the adequate management policy, it is important to get the clinical overview, underlying predisposing factors, different etiological agents and their response to antimicrobial agents among diabetic and non diabetic population separately. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital from February to April 2017. 105 patients were analyzed and clinical presentations, underlying co-morbid condition were noted. Etiological agents were identified and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by automated system. Monomicrobial (73.3%) infection prevailed in the both group. Gram negatives (74.1%) predominated among diabetics but in non-diabetics the infection was more with gram positive organisms (32.1%). 45.9% of the isolates were multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs). Foot infection frequently observed among males in the age group of 40-60 years. Trauma was found to be an important risk factor. Overall, prevalence of Gram negative infection was high. Surprisingly, infection with MDROs was more among non-diabetics.
