Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that is becoming more and more important as a major cause of morbidity and mortality not only among the traditionally affected elderly people but also among the youth and middle-aged individuals. This study was undertaken to study the Serum levels of phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, and chlorine, among 50 patients comprising of males and females with a range mean of age 43~56 with diabetes mellitus. The result of the investigation was compared with 5 each of non-diabetic patients as the control. The results of the study showed that there is a significant decrease with regards to the level of Phosphorus, Magnesium, and Calcium (P<0.01) in women and men compared to the control group. Contrastingly, a significant increase in the level of chloride was observed among both male and female diabetic patients in relation to their controls (P<0.01). Although female had a slightly higher level than male, the difference was not statistically significant. However, a statistically significant difference was recorded among female and their control as well as male and their corresponding control group. This is an indication that diabetes mellitus can adversely affect these essential micro-minerals and the study of their concentrations may have a clinical significance as well as diagnostic importance.
