Abstract

The cucumber crops are important in several Iraqi region, damping off and root rot of cucumber caused by Pythium aphanidermatum is a widespread disease in Iraq. Recently, a huge waste was produced from cultivated mushroom and it directly used as organic fertilizer, the objective of this research was to determine the efficacy of spent mushroom substrate (SMS). The result indicate that a high microbial population ? 105cfu mL-1 associated with SMS include five genus: Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., Alternaria sp., Trichoderma sp. and Rhizopus sp. Overall, the populations of Rhizopus sp, Penicillium sp. and Aspergillus sp., were the highest number of cfu which was 8.3-8.8 ×105 cfu followed by Trichoderma sp. and Alternaria sp. (2.0-1.5×105 cfu respectively). The efficacy of SMS results were showed significant differences in the percentage of disease incidence. It was recorded in the SMS treatments 43, 8, 8% compared with pathogen treatment after 45 day of planting. The percentage of disease incidence for the control 1 and the 50% SMS (without pathogen) was 0% while it was 41%. These results suggest that (SMS) has the potential to significantly control the root rot and damping off.
