Abstract

This study analyzed the nutritional, phytochemical, mineral and antimicrobial properties of two leafy vegetables from Mafikeng, South Africa. The leafy vegetables include: pumpkin (Curcubita moschata) and rape (Brassica napus). The mineral determined in the leafy vegetables at three different growing stages were K, Ca, P, S, Fe, Sr, Mn, Tm, Cu, Ru, Zn and Cl at different concentration. At growing stage one, Mn was present in C. moschata at 0.10% while absent in B. napus. Zn was present in B. napus at 0.08% and Cl at 17.15% while absent in C. moschata. At growing stage two, Cu was present at 0.01% in C. moschata but absent in B. napus but K was absent in both plant. At growing stage three Zn and Cu were absent in both leafy vegetables while Mn was present in B. napus at 0.09%, Tm was present in B. napus at 0.07% while absent in C. moschata, Sr was present in C. moschata at 0.02% while absent in B. napus. All extract shows no activity against S. typhi (ATCC 14208) and P. aeruginosa (ATCC 10145). C. moschata had the highest activity (18.20±0.33 mm) against B. subtilis (ATCC 11774) and lowest activity (10.22±0.28 mm) against P. mirabilis (ATCC 49132). B. napus had the highest activity (15.33±0.72 mm) against S. pyogenes (ATCC 12344) while lowest activity (8.20±0.33 mm) against K. pneumonia (ATCC8308). These results indicate potential usefulness of these plants in the treatment of various infectious diseases and potential therapeutic significance of the plant as natural source of drug development.
