Bimenyimana Hubert, Misbah Bashir and Humaib Nasir

Abstract

In the present study, physicochemical characteristics of domestic wastewater such as : TSS, TDS, turbidity, pH, alkalinity, hardness BOD, COD, phosphate and Total nitrogen content were determined over a period of 10 months which are major sources of domestic wastewater for Phagwara south city (Mast Nagar). The physical and chemical parameters evaluated ranged as follows. The values of influent for the physicochemical are: pH (7.7–7.9), TSS (235–275 mg/L), TDS (total dissolved solids) (298–350 mg/L), temperature (26–28°C), total nitrogen (21–35 mg/L), phosphate (6.23–11 mg/L), turbidity (51–84 NTU), sulphate (49–79 mg/L), BOD (175–311 mg/L) and COD (114–218 mg/L); and the values of outlet for the physico-chemical are: pH (7.1–7.5), TSS (14–29 mg/L), total dissolved solids (210–276 mg/L), temperature (25–28°C), total nitrogen (12–26 mg/L), phosphate (5–10.4 mg/L), turbidity (23–37 NTU), sulphate (24–42 mg/L), BOD (10–28.2 mg/L) and COD (23–85 mg/L). The treatment of wastewater system called Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) has recently become popular for enhanced nitrification and denitrification in aerobic zones. Also, user-friendly software such as Matlab using Kincannon-Stover models to control and predict the effluent for disposal in the water bodies or reuse purpose. Kincannon-Stover models were investigated, the parameters of Umax and KB were obtained (-0.0002g- 2.66g COD/L.d), (-1.19g -1.17g) BOD/Ld, (-0.0336g and 16.632 g) of total nitrogen /Ld and (-0.219g-16.04g of phosphate). The regression line for the plotted linear equation of the Kincannon-Stover model had a R2 of 0.54;0.956;0.0029 and 0.101. The present study demonstrated that the Kincannon-Stover model is more advisable, suitable and appropriate for prediction of the effluent substrate concentration of the MBBR.
