ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF EXPOSURE TO CELLPHONE RADIATIONS AND ITS IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH

A. Adappa Sholapuri and Shrinivas Rao

Abstract

The mobile – telecommunication services have tremendously developed in the last two decade and drastically increased the amount of radio frequency electromagnetic wave ex1posure in our daily lives. The use of cell phone has increased and over 6-7 billion cellular users worldwide today. This has triggered concern about the harmful radiation effects of cellphone exposure on human health. There are many published literatures indicating adverse health effects of cell phones which emit electromagnetic radiation, with maximum value of 50% of their energy being deposited when held close to the head. Therefore it is necessary to know the biological effects of electromagnetic radiation in cell phone frequency range. The international radiation governing agencies like ICNIRP, ICES and WHO have been assessing scientific evidences of possible health effects from such devices. There are many ongoing discussions whether the mobile phone radiation causes any health effects. So the purpose of this paper is to provide reader with insight in to the pitfalls associated with handset radiations, biological effects through available scientific evidences, safety guidelines and precautions when dealing with mobile phones whenever possible to limit or to avoid body exposure from this radiation.
