MEASUREMENT THERADIOACTIVITY FOR SOME ELEMENTS 40K, 238U, 232TH AND 222RN FOR SAMPLES IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BABYLON GOVERNORATE, IRAQ

Abstract

After studying the statistics related to cancer in Babel Governorate-IRAQ, we considered it necessary to study the radiation activity of the soil and water of this Governorate. We choose 20 sites in this research to study the radioactivity of the elements Uranium 238, Thorium 232, Potassium 40 and Radon 222 by using a Gamma ray spectrometer analysis system consists of a scintillation detector NaI (Tl) of 3"×3" crystal dimension and using radon monitoring system (RAD-7) of Durridge company USA. Each location was determined on the map by using GPS. The results showed that the average value of the 40K, 238U, 232Th and 222Rn activity concentrations were found90.673 Bq.kg-1, 1.963 Bq.kg-1, 1.938 Bq.kg-1 and 0.064 Bq.L-1 respectively. The average value of the radium equivalent (Raeq) was found to be 11.716 Bq.kg-1, while the average value of dose absorbed was found to be 5.891nGY/h. The annual effective dose equivalent, internal hazard index and external hazard index were measured. The results were less than the internationally permissible range (UNSCEAR, 2000) and thus, do not affect health hazard to population of the area.
