WAYS OF ASSESSMENT OF WATER QUALITY INDEX IN TONK DISTRICT OF RAJASTHAN, INDIARAMAVTAR GAUTAM, SIVARANJANI, S.AND AMITAVA RAKSHITAbstract Water is an important source for life, but nowadays deterioration of groundwater through various ways is common. Determining the water quality index is critical for improving ground water quality. The present study is aimed at assessing the water quality index (WQI) for the groundwater of Tonk District in Rajasthan in order to ascertain the quality of water for multiple purposes. Water samples have been collected from different blocks of Tonk district before and after rainy season, thirteen parameters have been considered for determining water quality index namely pH, EC,total dissolved solids, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, nitrate, sodium, potassium, phosphorus. The study shows that water quality index ranges between 38 to 93. This shows that Tonk district does not shows the characters of eutrophication. The high value of WQI has been found to be mainly from the higher values of nitrate, phosphorus, total dissolved solids, hardness and bicarbonate in the groundwater.
