SEASONAL VARIATION OF PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF TAMIRABARANI RIVER AND ESTUARY WATER THOOTHUKUDI DISTRICT, TAMIL NADU, INDIA

P. Subramanian and G. Vijayakumar

Abstract

Water is an important natural resource of earth and plays a vital role in our life. Surface water and groundwater are the major sources of water. The surface water qualities of major river basins are contaminated by the municipal and industrial discharges. Mapping of spatial variability of surface water quality is of vital importance and it is particularly significant where it is primary source of potable water. In order to assess the water quality the present study has been undertaken to map the spatial variability of water quality using Geographical Information System (GIS) approach. The physical parameters along the estuary of Tamirabarani River are studied. Nearly twenty four water samples are collected along the estuary in and around Eral and river mouth. Physical parameters like pH, Ec, TH, TDS, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulphates, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Nitrate-Nitrogen, and Fluoride. The constant variation of water samples is due to the linking of industrial and anthropogenic influences. The combined and collective consequences go in front to a serious risk to the entire estuarine environment.
