THE ACTIVITY OF PROBIOTIC PICKLE ISOLATE AGAINST ENTERIC PATHOGENS

Abstract

Our study aimed to explore Probiotic bacteria as a biocontrol agent against the potential pathogens in sewage. One bacterial strain isolated from lemon pickle based on its binding to human matrix protein, fibronectin and selective growth in De Man, Rogosa and Sharpe agar (MRS) media. The isolate ribotype was found similar to Bacillus tequilensis, with significant E-value (0). Spent media of the isolate showed potential enzymes activity like protease, lipase and chitinases. We checked the ability of the isolate to adapt in the sewage, by plotting the growth curve. The sewage treatment in suspension showed 41% reduction in the sewage load of Gram negative coli form by culturing them on Eosin Methylene Blue Agar (EMB). In addition, the isolate is a good biofilm former, and considered for developing biofilter system. The sand filter saturated with the isolate was used for the treatment of the sewage, which showed 53% reduction of EMB count. They did not show any adverse activity against model nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, with respect to the inhibition of egg hatching or mortality/deformity of the larvae.
