ASSESSMENT OF WATER QUALITY OF RIVER DAYA AT BHUBANESWAR CITY, ODISHA BY USING WATER QUALITY INDEX METHODKAMAL KISHORE AGRAWAL AND CHITTARANJAN PANDAAbstract In Bhubaneswar city urban waste water is discharged through Gangua nallah without treatment to river Daya . Daya is a distributary of river Kuakhai which is a part of Mahanadi river basin. Kuakhai and Daya rivers controls the drainage of Bhubaneswar city. A number of open drains pass through the city, some of which form Gangua nallah. Gangua nallah meets river Daya at Benabilli (20°8' 43' N, 85°47' 27'E). To assess the impact of Gangua nallah on river Daya, the Water Quality Index (WQI) was developed using eight water quality parameters like pH, TDS, Total Hardness, Chloride, DO, BOD, Nitrate and Phosphate. Weighted arithmetic water quality index method was used to calculate the WQI . The study was carried during September and December (2016). The WQI values during September (2016) at G and D2 shows a poor water quality status, and at other stations like D1,D3,D4,D5,D6,D7,D8 and D9 it is of good quality as it was a monsoon season. The WQI value during December (2016) at G, D2, D3 and D4 indicate a poor water quality status, , and at D1 which is a upstream station over Daya had a good water quality which can have all possible usage like drinking, irrigation and industrial, the WQI value at D5,D6,D7,D8 and D9 indicate a good water quality due to aeration and self purification.
