INVESTIGATION OF WATER QUALITY PARAMETERS FOR COASTAL LAGOONHEBA HUSSIEN, S. ATABAY, M. MORTULA AND TARIG ALIAbstract This paper presents the results of a hydrodynamic model coupled with water quality model for the Dubai Creek. The main purpose of this study was to understand the processes affecting water quality parameters in the creek. In order to evaluate the amount, source and distribution of algae, dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate (NO3-) and phosphate (PO43-) in the creeks water, a one dimensional (1D) hydrodynamic model was constructed using the commercial software, HECRAS, and was coupled with a water quality model. The model was calibrated with historical water levels and water quality data collected by the Dubai Municipality. The modeling results showed an increase in algal growth from the creeks mouth to Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and high nutrients concentrations in the vicinity of the Sewage Treatment Plant Outfall location. The model showed that the creeks mouth has the highest levels of dissolved oxygen. Different scenarios on water quality parameters were also investigated and the results showed no clear correlations between Algae, DO, nitrate and phosphate.
