Abstract

In India, the Submersible Induction Motor (SIM) is considered to be the work horse in the field of agriculture for irrigation based applications due to its simple line start mechanisms. The SIM forms the basic prime over for the agricultural pumps, which is responsible for the maximum yielded discharge for effective groundwater harvesting in the irrigation applications. The efficiency of the SIM greatly depends on its electromagnetic characteristics which influences the overall system efficiency of the submersible pumpset’s. Many research works have attempted to enhance the efficiency of the SIM by optimizing its electromagnetic characteristics. This research work aims in performance enhancement of the SIM by considering various metallurgical composition of the steel used in the stator and rotor as the core material. A 7.5 kW SIM is considered for the design, and it is manufactured with varied metallurgical composition and tested in real-time. An optimized metallurgical composition is proposed to increase the SIM efficiency which forms the basic aspect for energy conservation for effective groundwater harvesting in agricultural applications.
