REMOVAL OF FLUORIDE FROM LEACHATES USING LOCAL SOIL COLUMN

Abstract

Fluoride in drinking water beyond permissible level can cause a disease in human known for worst form of bone disorders and body crippling. Efforts are continuously being made to remove fluoride from drinking water. Passing of water containing fluoride through minerals beds containing kaolinite is an economic option for the removal of fluoride. In this paper an attempt has been made to determine the number of pore volume of water that can be defluoridised by passing through a given quantity of soil bed to any designed level. Thus standard column experimental breakthrough curves are obtained on the compacted soil containing kaolinite as the principal clay mineral with leaching water containing 100 mg/L. It was observed that up to 18 number of pore volumes of water can be passed without any significant levels of fluoride. Further an attempt is made to determine transport parameters for the fluoride in the soil using soil column data. These can be obtained by comparing the experimental breakthrough curves with theoretical curves obtained with assumed values of effective diffusion coefficient and retardation factor using POLLUTE software based on advection diffusion model. This data can be used to estimate the breakthrough time for a given thickness of the soil liner below any waste disposal facility.
