AN EVALUATION OF FISH FAUNA AND THE POPULATION OF AN ENDANGERED FRESHWATER FISH, BRACHYMYSTAX LENOK TSINLINGENSIS IN KOREA : JEONG-AM TEMPLE HABITAT

Dohun Lim and Yoonjin Lee1

Abstract

This study was performed to evaluate the habitat for Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis, an endangered fish species in Korea, in the area of the Jeong-am temple sanctuary. The water quality in the Jeongamsastream appeared suitable to support B. lenok tsinlingensis, a cold-water fish, in terms of water temperature and DO. However, only two fish species, Rhynchocypris oxycephalus and B. lenok, were found. Brachymystax lenok had body lengths under 200 mm, and the regression coefficient for the relationship between fish length and weight of 2.8 and the negative slope for the condition factor demonstrated unstable growth of B. lenok in this area. Few pools had depths over 3 m, and habitat barriers impeded the movement of B. lenok.
