MOLECULAR BIOTECHNOLOGY OF ALGAE: HIGH POTENTIAL, VERY SLOW RESEARCH PROGRESS

GYANESH SINGH

Abstract

Algae have always been extremely important to sustain and boost the survival of all organisms on this planet. However, their utilization in biology and medicine has been minimal. In last few years, increasing awareness about the potential of these organisms has led to increase in the use of these organisms in several areas. Currently, algae have been recognized as a very valuable organism for bio energy sector, and their use in other areas of biology and medicine is increasing day by day. However, It is still unfortunate to see the serious lack of use of molecular techniques in these organisms. Very few countries and only a handful of industries are doing genetic engineering of algae, despite the availability of easy tools for algal engineering. In India also, use of algae in research and industries is less, and engineering of this group of organisms is mostly not seen. This paper discusses availability of molecular tools and techniques for algae, and compare the ease and feasibility of use of algal engineering with respect to the engineering of other group of organisms.
