Abstract

Chennai is one of the major metropolitan cities in India, situated along the southern Bay of Bengal coast, Tamil Nadu State. Flooding is one of the very serious disasters which Chennai city faces almost during every North-East monsoon season. Rapid urbanization, encroachment of water bodies made this city more vulnerable to flood. This study mainly focuses on modelling of the flooding scenario in Adyar sub-basin using integration of hydrological model HEC-HMS and hydraulic model HEC-RAS. High resolution LiDAR DEM, rainfall data, cross sections of river were used as input to the model for preparing the flood hydro-graph and flood inundation map. Model results were validated using flood depths collected during December 2015 flood event. This model set-up serves as an effective tool for flood management and urban planning.
