ENERGY EFFICIENCY ANALYSIS OF AN EXISTING BUILDING IN A SEMI-ARID REGION

J. Brema and Ajish Ajoel Abraham

Abstract

Urbanization leads to increase in residential, commercial, public and industrial buildings which contribute for one-fourth of the total electrical energy consumption in a region. The design of energy efficient buildings depends on a selection of appropriate methodology and techniques that is suitable to the surrounding climate. For an energy efficient building, two important elements are to be considered. They are the cooling technology and the electrical appliances (including the lighting system). In this paper, the focus is on the design of a public building in a semi-arid climate. Based on the literature, data and the results from the case study in Tamilnadu are gathered and a strategy for energy efficient buildings is proposed. At the end of the study, it was derived that there is a possibility of reducing energy consumption based on the analysis of the building during the summer and winter seasons.
