IMPACT OF DROUGHT ON CROPPING PATTERN OF AURANGABAD, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA

Abstract

Agriculture is a primary income source for farmers in Aurangabad. Drought creeps slowly and passively. The annual rainfall of district in 2012- 13 was 56.21% resulted in agricultural drought. The crop growth is impacted due to less soil moisture. It impacted on land utilization by increase in the fallow land by 836 ha and decrease in net area under crop decreased by 1782 ha. The unavailability of water for irrigation may cause reduction in Wheat, Gram and Vegetable cultivation. The crop combinations reduced, crop ranking was same but changes in percentage of area under cropin drought year. The productivity of all crops except gram is decreased. The cotton crop with maximum area resulted in only 17.38 % crop production. The agricultural drought impacted major farmer population in Aurangabad district.
