Anton Dvornikov, Gleb Zagrebin and Anatoly Afanasyev

Abstract

This work devoted to the qualitative selection of settlements in the process of generalization of small-scale mapping. The basis for the qualitative selection of settlements is the ranking of settlements by importance. Authors conducted the research in the search of such indicators for calculating the significance of settlements that will be objective, global and generally available. As such sources authors propose to consider the synthetic snapshot of the intensity of the glow of the earthÂ’s surface, data from the Open Street Map (OSM) project, a list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Based on these data, indicators of economic importance, historical significance and socio-infrastructural significance are constructed. The article reflects the mechanism to obtain the data and get an integral index of significance of settlements on the basis of this data. The importance of settlements is represented by the significance code of settlements. The process of encoding settlements based on the significance code is described. The hierarchical classification of the significance of settlements is given. As a result, in the article the obtained algorithm is approved and the obtained result is compared with the published samples of small-scale maps.
