NATURE OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE AND POLLUTION IN THEWESTERN SUBURBS, MUMBAI MEGACITY

Abstract

Municipal solid waste has been growing exponentially in the metropolis in India much higher thanwhat the planners can combat. Rattled with the increasing population and paucity of space todispose the waste, the management of the waste to ensure lower pollution is the greatest challenge.These volumes of waste need to be managed sustainably and with maximum efficiency involvingsegregation, recycling, and waste disposal in a scientific manner. However, in the process ofreduction of the waste post segregation, the waste can be converted into resources which wouldenable the easier dissemination of the MSW and the rising benefits to the households. The purposeof this study was to identify the polluting aspects from the collected waste in the western suburbanareas of the Mumbai megacity.
