Abstract

Accidents and fatalities have been reviewed, and the main reasons that contribute to fires and explosions on offshore oil and gas platforms have been identified. The fundamental features of offshore oil and gas platforms that determine their increased fire hazard have been analyzed. Fire protection measures of both technical and organizational nature have been provided for reducing fire hazard, protecting personnel and viability of the oil and gas platforms. Methods of improving explosion safety of oil and gas platforms based on the use of automatic fire suppression systems of various types have been presented. The known technologies of reducing amount of fire risk on oil and gas production platforms have been considered. The methods based on theoretical analysis of applied research in the field of ensuring fire safety of oil and gas facilities in the offshore Arctic shelf have been used in the paper.
