EVALUATING THE PHOSPHORUS REMOVAL PERFORMANCE OF AN AGED SUBSURFACE CONSTRUCTED WETLAND IN MALAYSIASoo Zhi Chin, Wong Jee Khai, Chow Ming Fai and Ni Lar WinAbstract Limited study is carried out to determine the treatment performance of subsurface constructed wetland after years of operations. Thus, this study aimed to determine the removal efficiency of phosphorus in the aged subsurface constructed wetland in Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Malaysia. A total of seven storm events were monitored for the storm water samples collection at the inlet and outlet of studied wetland. All samples were analyzed for its orthophosphate (PO4) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations. The event mean concentration (EMC) was determined for each pollutant in every storm event in order to quantify the storm water quality. The efficiency ratio was used to determine phosphorus removal efficiency of the studied wetland. Results indicated that the removal efficiencies of PO4 range from -14% to 94% while for TP range from 24% to 89%. The mean PO4 and TP removal efficiencies are 59% and 65%, respectively. The overall performance of the studied subsurface constructed wetland in removing orthophosphate and total phosphorus is still satisfactory.
