ASSESSMENT OF HIGHWAY WIDENING AND ITS DYNAMIC INTERACTIONS WITH LAND USE PATTERN

R. Jino and R. Murugasan

Abstract

Land use analysis has become an important element in the planning and organization of highway expansion. The state highways department has widened the existing two lane highway of NH 45 from Chennai to Trichy to a four lane configuration considering the traffic volume and expected increase of level of service. The entire sketch (300km) is covering nearly seven districts including many towns and villages. In addition, the feasibility study for six lane in proposal is in progress. However, the lack of understanding of land use pattern and highway interactions from the transportation engineers may lead to delay in the implementation of the proposed development project. The present study attempts to analyze the land use dynamic degree and its interactions with highway widening system that could be sustainable for the future planning of six or eight lane. A regression model is developed to interpret the land use pattern and proposed highway design in terms of road capacity, traffic volume. The recommendations from the study may help the transportation network that could be planned in a more efficient way.
