Kapil K. Sharma, J.S. Minhas, Kamlesh Malik and Joy Deep Dutta

Abstract

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L) is the most promising non cereal food crop in the world for ensuring food and nutritional security in developing countries. Potatoes are vegetatively propagated crop, the rate of degeneration is very high due to the accumulation of viruses in the tubers which are used as seed in next crop season. So the population of insect vector during the crop season has detrimental effect on the seed quality. From the three years of studies at ICAR-CPRS, Jalandhar has shown that in early crop whitefly is causing high incidence apical leaf curl virus and in the late sown crops aphid vectors are causing severe mosaic in the crop due to transmission of virus complexes. Seed window for potato seed production under seed plot technique for northwestern plains has narrowed down.
