NUMERICAL MODELING OF GROUNDWATER FLOW IN KARAYANCHAVADI REGION OF CHENNAI, TAMILNADU, INDIA

K. Dhanasekar and P. Partheeban

Abstract

It is noted that in Tamilnadu, there is evidently much dependence on groundwater due to scarce surface water. The present study was carried out with the objective of developing a numerical model for the study area in order to understand the behavior of the system with the changes in hydrological stresses. The area taken for study purpose is Karayanchavadi which is located in the downstream of Chembarambakkam Lake. The study area has been categorized based on land usage. The modeling study has been carried out using Visual MODFLOW software. The study area is limited to 80sq-km. This area is discretized in to 4800 cells with 3 layers. Groundwater levels were measured from 24 wells in the study area during the year 2009. Water level, lithology, topography, rainfall data’s were obtained from CPWD, Chennai. The MODFLOW model is calibrated and validated. Simulation was carried out from the year 2009onwards. The validated model is used for simulation of the ground water recharge and quality for next 15 years under different scenarios. The simulated groundwater head values compare reasonably with the observed trends. The model developed can be used as an effective tool for the management of this aquifer system.
