Abstract

The problem of on-farm burning of crop residues/straw is intensifying in recent years and one can overcome from this by use of field baler. The poor performance of livestock in developing countries is due to seasonal inadequacy of feed, both in terms of quantity and quality. Therefore, fortification of crop residues/straw is necessary to improve their quality. Pertaining to this, a fortification application system was developed as an attachment to the standard square baler for production of fortified bale. Its performance was tested under laboratory condition. The flow rate obtained from hollow cone nozzles used for spraying solution were 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8 L min-1 at operating pressure ranging from 2.5, 2.4 and 2.3 kg cm-2 respectively. The energy consumed by the used DC pump while pumping the solution at 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8 L min-1 flow rate were 34, 29.56 and 27.12 W-h respectively. The total cost incurred for development of FAS was Rs. 7176. The breakeven point, payback period and benefit cost ratio of developed FAS were 1172.61 hrs per annum, 5 years 2 months and 13 days and 464.34 respectively.
