ECOLOGICAL ARCHITECTURE IN RESPONSE OVER THE CENTURIES, A CASE STUDY: ULQIN OF ADRIATIC SEA

Abstract

It is believed that Ulqin, Montenegro, is one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast. Due to its morphological and geographical position, at many times has been targeted by a number of invaders. But, how the Ulqin response over the centuries accordingly to the ecological architecture design with his urbanites? What is bioclimatic architecture and what represents this term in context of design? Humans has always striven to create a comfortable environment for living. Those efforts are best documented in the construction of architectural structures everywhere in Ulqin, from ancient history to the present. The study presented in this paper investigated the Ulqin urban structure, and especially city castle, focusing on the ecological design principles, bio comfort and quality of life issues. The research method consists of empirical observation through city and region, with an objective to survey how Ulqin response in adopting, adapting, and implementing of bioclimatic design principles over the centuries. A holistic approach to the architectural design, in accordance with bioclimatic principles, can be used as a working model in finding the best possible solution for implementation on actions for better quality of life.
