ASSESSMENT OF NITRATE POLLUTION IN GROUNDWATER IN EASTERN PART OF PUNE DISTRICT, INDIA

Y.M. Nandurkar

Abstract

Ground water is the drinking source in study area and nitrate contamination is a matter of concern. The present study is undertaken to identify the extent of nitrate contamination and responsible factors. Thirty water samples were collected in pre and post monsoon seasons. These samples were analyzed. 50% water samples in pre monsoon and 20% water samples in post monsoon were found to be unfit. Fresh water recharge in post monsoon diluted the contamination. Good correlation of nitrate with chloride, potassium, EC, sodium and potassium endorse the input from fertilizers. Controlled application of fertilizers and modification in crop pattern can reduce the nitrate pollution.
