Abstract

Present study deals with the assessment of groundwater quality at different sites in District Haridwar. The samples were collected to analyze the physico-chemistry and suitability of water for domestic purposes. Selected ground water parameters were pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Acidity, Total Alkalinity, Free Carbon dioxide (free CO2) as well as Total Hardness (Ca+/Mg+). To analyse the water quality three sites (1, 2 and 3) were compared with a control site (site-4). Comparison showed the pH level was slightly acidic (6.8±0.18) at site-1 and 2. Low values of DO (3.9±0.45) at site-3, high values of BOD (>3mg/L) at all four sites especially at site-2 (5.20±0.51), high value of alkalinity at all three sites and high values of Free CO2 (>2) at sites 1 & 3. Each parameter was compared with the standard desirable limit prescribed by WHO. For the statistical analysis, values of mean, standard deviations and correlation co-efficients (r) were calculated. The Karl Pearson Correlation matrix has approved the influence of temperature on COD, alkalinity and COD-alkalinity with significantly positive correlation. The study showed that groundwater quality is not so good for drinking purposes and it should be well treated before use.
