WEED DYNAMICS IN RICE-WHEAT CROPPING SYSTEM UNDER LONG TERM INTEGRATED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT EXPERIMENT

Parminder Singh Sandhu and Sohan Singh Walia

Abstract

A study to investigate the effect of integrated nutrient management on weed dynamics in Rice-wheat system under long-term field experiment was carried out during 2013-14 and 2014-15 at permanent plots under rice-wheat system experiment, which was initiated in 1983 at Agronomy farm of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Among different treatments, the lowest weed biomass in rice crop was achieved in treatment T10 (When 50 per cent N was being substituted by GM in kharif season followed by 100 per cent of recommended NPK dose through chemical fertilizers in rabi season)i.e 10.9 m-2 during 2013 and 7.5 weeds m-2 during 2014. But in wheat crop the lowest weed biomass was achieved in treatment T13 (when 180 kg N,30 kg, P2O5 and 30 kg k2O was applied to rice crop followed by 150 kg N, 60 kg P2O5 and 30 kg K2O to wheat crop) i.e 5.2 and 5.3 weeds m-2 during 2013 and 2014 respectively. More weed biomass in control plot was mainly due to the less competition by crop plant to weeds.
