HEAVY METAL IN SEDIMENTS OF KABAR LAKE, A TROPICAL WETLAND IN BEGUSARAI DISTRICT OF BIHAR

Rupa Dey and Sunil K. Choudhary

Abstract

Kabar wetland has ecological significance as it has been a home for several associated biodiversities. A study was carried out to investigate the degree of contamination in the sediments of Kabar wetland. The concentration of metals Cu, Cr, Cd, Fe and Mn has been evaluated using Enrichment factor, Contamination factor, PLI and Geo accumulation Index (Igeo). From the analyzed results it has been observed that the mean concentration of Fe and Cd exceeded the Surface rock average value. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) value of the studied area ranged from 0.178 to 0.725 that indicates the wetland sediment without any appreciable input from industrial effluents but it increases gradually every year. The concentration of Cd for contamination factor exceeded the desirable limit of CF values and can cause potential pollution risk in the future.Based on calculated values of CF, PLI and Igeo the present study indicates the sources of heavy metals in Kabar lake sediment are natural (coming from the earthÂ’s surface) and through some anthropogenic activities (like agricultural runoff, domestic waste discharge etc.).
