MAPPING THE SOIL FERTILITY STATUS OF DIFFERENT VILLAGES OF DISTRICT SHAHEED BHAGAT SINGH NAGAR, PUNJAB IN INDIA

Varinder Singh Saimbhi1 and Rajinder Pal

Abstract

The district Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar (NawanShahr) is located between 31o16’48" N to 30o58’30" N and 75o47’38" E to 76o30’26" E part of Punjab state on the right side of Sutlej river. The district falls in two agroclimatic zones and four agro-ecological conditions for agricultural and allied activities. In production agriculture, soil nutrients get depleted with time and farmer’s tendency of over usage of fertilizers has already been observed and reported. In an attempt, soil samples from 141 locations from 42 farmer fields in 21 villages in the district were collected. The Punjab soils are generally low in nitrogen (N) content. So, different samples of soil were analyzed for percent soil organic carbon (SOC), available phosphorous (P), available potassium (K) and soil reaction (pH) for mapping the nutrient status of sampled villages of the district. Soil test based nutrient status was mapped on the map of district as per the geographical location of the sites of the villages for easy visualization, assessment and recommendation.
