ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METAL DISTRIBUTION OF MANGROVE SEDIMENT OF THOOTHUKUDI COAST, TAMIL NADU

M. Glory and P. Hermalin

Abstract

Sediment samples collected from Roche Beach, Inigo nagar, Karapad, Korampallam creek (upstream and downstream) of Thoothukudi coast were subjected to study trace metal distribution and associated physico chemical parameters such as pH, acidity, alkalinity and salinity. Nutrient parameters such as CaCO3, organic carbon also measured using standard procedure. The heavy metal distribution level was analyzed based on APHA method using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The greatest amount of CaCO3 showed in station II is due to plenty of shell fragments noticed at this station. The maximum rate of nitrate and total phosphate reported in the study area at station IV & V were measure as 30.8 mg/Kg, 30.6 mg/Kg & 3.93 mg/Kg, 3.48 mg/Kg respectively. The metal distribution and their environmental concerns were analysed using various indexes such as Enrichment Factor (EF), Metal Pollution Index (MPI) and Geo accumulation Index (Igeo). The results of these indices indicated that the study area is contaminated with cadmium and arsenic.
