Abstract

Nano cellulose is a term referring to nano-structured cellulose. Cellulose is an organic compound that is found virtually everywhere, since it is the main component of the cell walls of every plant on Earth. The use of cellulose as reinforcing agents in composite building materials offer many advantages such as the possibility to manufacture products with low density and good biodegradability and improved mechanical performance. In this study M40 grade concrete is reinforced with 0.5%, 1%, and 2% nano cellulose in order to observe effect of nano cellulose on mechanical properties of concrete. Compressive tests, split tensile tests and flexure tests are performed on concrete specimen. Results shows addition of 0.5% NFC results in 13 % increase in compressive strength, 12% increase in flexure strength, whereas there is no significant change in split tensile strength of concrete
