Abstract

The present investigation was comprised of eighty dervied test crosses along with twenty parental lines and four tester with one standard checks planted in randomized complete block design with two replications in Kharif 2014. This study was done to analyse mean performance, combining ability and standard heterosis of parents and crosses respectively, for selecting desirable parents for future breeding. The results revealed that, there were highly significant differences among the treatments for all the economic important traits taken in study. It was also noted that the grain yield and number of seeds per row of ear, L12 and L13, showed significant positive gca effect indicating that the per se performance of the parents and gca could prove as an useful index for selection of parents. L13 showed highest mean per se performance with high gca for yield while in testers, T4 tester found est combiner for grain yield. In top crosses, two crosses mainly L11 x T4 and L13 x T3 found higher heterosis for with significant sca effects for grain yield in maize.
