USING THE NEPERIAN LOGARITHM IN DETERMINING THE PARTICLES DIAMETER ESPECIALLY FOR FRACTIONAL DIMENSIONS BASED ON PHI SCALE

Hossein Pirkharrati

Abstract

Study of sediment texture is an important object in sedimentology, geology, hydrology which has wide uses. Evaluation the diameter of the constituent particles of sediments is the base of sedimentary texture study. Scale to determine the diameter of the particles based on magnitude can be different. Some of these scales are: mm, relative and Phi. There are several methods for measurement of particle diameter which include: direct metrage, microscopy, and immersion and sift. In all mentioned cases, particle diameter scale is measured in millimeter. To interpret the particle diameter by using graphical method (cumulative curves), Phi scale is defined according to the Krumbein formula. It has been a long time so many researches endeavored to find a solution for this complicacy. A formula (Neperian logarithm) is presented in this paper that can be usedto solve the complexity of Phi scale according to Krumbein formula.
