GENETIC DIVERSITY ASSESSMENT OF GREEN MUSSEL, PERNA VIRIDIS IN SOUTH INDIAN COASTAL REGION USING MICROSATELLITE MARKERS

P. VISVANATHAN, M. GOVINDARAJU AND M. THANGARAJ

Abstract

This study was done to assess the genetic diversity of green mussel, Perna viridis population, along the South Indian coastal region with various chemical industries. One hundred and twenty individuals were collected from six locations and analysed by 5 microsatellite loci. Genetic diversity deficiencies were observed across all the six populations and no high level differences were observed between the populations. The analysis revealed that P.viridis from the SIPCOT Cuddalore and Calicut areas were found to be the most closed populations than the other populations. These two areas are highly contaminated by heavy metal effluent and the residing populations are exposed to the pollutant and adapted accordingly showed the similarity.
